Inactivation of isocitrate lyase during myxospore development in Myxococcus xanthus.

The inactivation of isocitrate lyase which occurs during late stages of myxospore formation in Myxococcus xanthus was studied. Several findings are reported. (i) Protein synthesis is required over a specific time interval in order for isocitrate lyase inactivation to occur at a later time. (ii) Metabolic energy is required at all times during myxospore development if the inactivation is to occu...

Myxospore formation in Myxococcus xanthus: chemical changes in the cell wall during cellular morphogenesis.

Vegetative cells of Myxococcus xanthus (strain FB) were induced to form myxospores by the glycerol induction technique. Several structural changes took place in the peptidoglycan during myxospore formation. The percent of the peptidoglycan comprised of monomer (disaccharide peptide) decreased from about 20% to approximately 7%. The proportion of the total diaminopimelic acid possessing a free a...

Phase transitions during fruiting body formation in Myxococcus xanthus

The formation of a collectively moving group benefits individuals within a population in a variety of ways such as ultra-sensitivity to perturbation, collective modes of feeding, and protection from environmental stress. While some collective groups use a single organizing principle, others can dynamically shift the behavior of the group by modifying the interaction rules at the individual leve...

Adenylate energy charge during fruiting body formation by Myxococcus xanthus.

The adenylate energy charge of developing Myxococcus xanthus cells was measured. The energy charge of vegetative cells (0.81) does not change significantly during the course of fruiting body formation. Furthermore, myxospores, which are resistant, resting cells present in the fruiting body, have a relatively high energy charge (0.73).

The peptidoglycan sacculus of Myxococcus xanthus has unusual structural features and is degraded during glycerol-induced myxospore development.

Upon nutrient limitation cells of the swarming soil bacterium Myxococcus xanthus form a multicellular fruiting body in which a fraction of the cells develop into myxospores. Spore development includes the transition from a rod-shaped vegetative cell to a spherical myxospore and so is expected to be accompanied by changes in the bacterial cell envelope. Peptidoglycan is the shape-determining str...
